Ireland is changing.

Our streets, schools and timelines are more diverse, more open and more connected than at any point in our history. Alongside that social and cultural change, there is a quiet resurgence: a longing to connect with something uniquely ours, something that belongs to everyone who calls this island (or its diaspora) home.

For us, that “something” is Gaeilge.

As the face and complexion of the nation becomes more diverse, is there not a real possibility to place Gaeilge at the centre of a new, shared, inclusive concept of Irish identity? Not as a gatekeeping tool or a test, but as a bridge: a common cultural thread that anyone can choose to pick up.

Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.

A country without a language is a country without a soul.

Today, that soul is very much alive. From the work of organisations like Conradh na Gaeilge , to podcasts, community groups, Gaelscoileanna and online creators, there is a growing ecosystem of people using, celebrating and renewing the language every day. Cogar wants to stand alongside that effort and add something new: a dedicated, modern, everyday digital home for Irish.

For the first time in history, we have the skills, the knowledge and the desire to use technology to enhance the position and status of Gaeilge, not only in Ireland but around the world. More and more of our media, our friendships and our communities live on our phones. So why not create a space where Irish is the default, not the exception?

Cogar exists to:

  • Ensure that Gaeilge has a visible, natural place in the everyday digital lives of people, right there on their phones.

  • Create a holistic social media experience trí Ghaeilge, where day-to-day use of the language feels normal, not niche.

  • Engage users of different levels – from cúpla focal to líofa – based on their preferences for feeds, topics and media.

  • Provide access to resources for learners and intermediate speakers, woven into real, living content.

  • Provide a gateway to discover Irish media, art, literature and creators.

  • Provide ways to create and join groups and events, online and offline.

  • Provide tools to promote Irish businesses and projects globally.

  • Above all, provide a means to normalise the language in everyday contexts, not just in classrooms, Gaeltachtaí or mandated spaces.

It is also a core aim of Cogar Teicneolaíochta to explore opportunities for additional digital services, apps and resources trí Ghaeilge: tools that push the language forward into the new age. We want to demonstrate that software engineering, product design and modern technology can be done through Irish, and to foster innovation that keeps the language not only alive, but thriving.

In short: Cogar is about culture and language, and it is open to all.

If Irish can become a shared foundation for a more inclusive, confident idea of Irish identity, then our job is to build the tools that make choosing that foundation easy, joyful and part of everyday life.
