What is Cogar?
Cogar is an Irish-language social platform, created to build a digital oasis for our native language. We are not a small add-on to a major platform, but a vibrant space where Irish is the language of the home.
It was built for conversation, community, creativity and connection. A living, contemporary oasis where Irish can flourish — where it can be heard, seen and used online as naturally as in a Gaeltacht pub or at the kitchen table.
Problem
- Irish is underrepresented in mainstream social media
- Existing platforms are not designed around Irish-speaking communities
- Irish-language activity is fragmented across multiple platforms and groups
- Mainstream platforms optimise for scale and engagement rather than language community needs
- There is no dedicated modern social platform built primarily for everyday use through Irish
Product
Cogar is a social platform built around the Irish language, designed for fluent speakers, learners, organisations and the wider diaspora.
Cogar is intended to be an environment where Irish is not treated as a secondary language or a localization option alone, but as a central part of the product, the community and the commercial model.
Core functions
- Public and private posts
- Direct and group messaging
- Events listing
- Resources listing
- Organisation and teacher discovery
- Lists and saved feeds
- Notifications
- Account and profile tools
- Video sharing functionality
- Games
Available across mobile, with web functionality in development forming part of the wider platform. The product is developed internally.
Cogar is currently centralised and operates on managed infrastructure, with the aim of migrating to independent platform infrastructure when cost-permissive.
External links can be shared manually, but Cogar does not depend on social-media integrations for its core operation.
